In 2018, I started a website called Walkable Edmonton. You may have heard about it, joined us at the launch, or enjoyed any of our content – either on the website, Instagram, or our newsletter called The Weekly.
Walkable Edmonton was a passion project that I created to be a hub for everything I love in the center of our city – our green spaces, River Valley, local Edmonton boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops, and our beloved arts scene.
Walkable Edmonton featured our central neighbourhoods – primarily Garneau, Strathcona, Ritchie, McKernan, Parkallen, Westmount, Downtown, and Wîhkwêntôwin (formerly Oliver), with features for Alberta Avenue, Belgravia, North Glenora, and many others.
I grew up in McKernan, and have lived central for my whole life. My husband and I met through friends who worked at The Sugar Bowl, and to this day you will often find us at a local coffee shop working on our laptops, walking our dog in the ravine, or enjoying dinner with family and friends at one of our favourite restaurants, so we are still very passionate about walkable life.
Over the course of building the Walkable Edmonton website, we met with many of our favourite local business owners and did videos featuring the mainstays of the Edmonton scene – The Sugar Bowl, Jacek Chocolates, come to mind.
We even had a Dogs of Walkable Edmonton category where we featured our favourite local dogs.
Our newsletter, The Weekly, featured events in Edmonton, from festivals to food trucks, drag shows to music events. This was one of my favourite features and one I know was sadly missed in the community.
I had to make the very difficult decision during the COVID shutdown to pause the platform. We had major expenses to run it as well as a catastrophic failure of our web platform design at the same time, which would have meant investing another huge chunk of cash which just wasn’t sustainable. I was very disappointed but my passion for walkable neighbourhoods never changed.
Now with better tools and AI capabilities, we are working on re-launching Walkable Edmonton in a new, sleeker form!
